NewBE

PROJECT SUMMARY

NewBe (New to Berkeley) is a job family based on-boarding program for advisors and student service professionals. It provides essential resources through an eLearning program, community events, informal mentoring, and opportunities for  knowledge transfer and problem solving.

ROLE: Focus group gap analysis, market research and benchmarking. Instructional designer, content creation, script writing, graphic design, and branding.

Co-creator, Amy Veramay.

AUDIENCE: New advisors and their managers, faculty with an interest in advising.

INSTRUCTIONAL STRATEGY: Hybrid, Competency Based

eLearning (Canvas) modules include embedded video, case study, vignettes, and manager tools. An engagement map directs learning and community involvement over several months. Social and informal learning activities supplement the eLearning interface. Password protected site.

CONTENT: Core modules in critical compliance related subjects (student mental health, emergency response, equity and inclusion, Title IX, ethics and student systems). Core conceptual and functional material is accessed through the eLearning site (start-up). Social and informal learning is accessed through learning communities (meet-up),  informal mentoring is offered (pair-up) and project based learning opportunities (step-up) help include and engage new talent more quickly.

IMPACT: The first campus-wide hybrid on-boarding program for the largest job family. Significant cost savings realized from using blended strategies. Ensures exposure to core content and engagement with others for a widely dispersed audience without opportunity for regular contact. Established community wide standards for essential knowledge.

TESTIMONIAsL:

In my capacity supporting Elizabeth's work with the Advancing Practice series, I felt professionally challenged and personally supported. Through the development of the NewBE online course, I had the opportunity to work  collaboratively and closely with her. At every check in I was always impressed with the thoughtfulness and wisdom Elizabeth brought to the project. Her dedication to continued learning and growth has been an inspiration for me and I am constantly excited to see whatever she's going to do next.

As a manager with a large staff I couldn't be more impressed with NewBe. It has helped save significant time in getting new staff up to speed with minimal oversight and complements our in-house training. It sets just the right tone for our community. The depth and breadth are incredible and yet its so elegant and simple to use and understand.
